When was the last time you went on a trip to celebrate your birthday? Where did you go?

I try to as often as possible but that’s not always how it goes down. Most the time on the week of my birthday, I take vacation which works out perfectly since it is the end of June.

But since it is #yearof40, I am doing it up! My thoughts are go hard or go home. I am certainly sticking with my theme for the year….intentional living! I will tell you more aboit those trips later.

How do you decide where to go?

This part of the process can be the most difficult unless you have had your little ole heart set on something to begin with. There are just so many amazing places to experience! I use the word experience because that is really the best way to travel. You want to not just see somewhere but to really experience what a place has to offer and how people live there.

Here are some questions to ask yourself when you start planning…

  • What makes you happy?
  • relax or on the move?
  • Beach, city or nature?
  • budget friendly or no limits?
  • lone ranger or group vacay?
  • Are nightlife or daytime activities more important?
  • Is shopping a must?
  • Are you an adrenaline junkie?
  • Are you a foodie?

Personally, I wanted to make sure to visit places that I dream about. Places that have lots of things to do. I prefer big city traveling to experience as much as possible in a short time. I also wanted to make it about sharing something special and amazing with the most important people in my life.

My 40th Birthday Trips….

As mentioned earlier, I made plans to do multiple big vacations. They each are with different people and will offer different styles of vacation.

First, me and my lil fam of 4 went to the Happiest Place on earth, Disney World, for the very first time. It was awesome!

Second, I will be packing up the kiddos and taking the them to one of my favorite places in the states, Washington DC! This is certainly a must see for any and every one! This trip is two-fold because we will also be enjoying a family block party pig roast! Yes my big ole Puerto Rican family travels 500 miles away to celebrate a pig!

Lastly, I am planning my first girls trip in almost a decade to the city that never sleeps with some of my very best friends. Now that disney is over this keeps me up at night with planning excitement!

These are just a few of incredible places to celebrate in without leaving the states. And you can certainly travel outside the US to celebrate as well but out of country travel can be slightly more expensive and complicated so we will stick with stateside travel at this time.

The list of cities below would be perfect to celebrate in for several reasons:

  • They have fun day and night time activities, perfect to find something that works for anyone
  • They are great places to spend a short weekend getaway or a week long stint
  • Due to cost, a short trip may be best so why not go to a place where you get the most bang for your buck! 😜

Top 8 Celebration Destinations!

1. VEGAS

Sin City

What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas is legit! There is so much nightlife, it melds into day life. 😁 But seriously if eating, drinking or gambling is your thing, this is definitely the place for you. Even if they aren’t your thing, there is plenty to do. Just walk along the strip and be mesmerized by the themes and grandeur of the many hotel resorts. Make sure to go inside too! You can also take a day trip and to see the Hoover Dam or the Grand Canyon, watch a Vegas show or check out the Freemont Street experience. There are just sooo many fantastic options.

2. New York City

🎶🎶I want to wake up in the city that doesnt sleep!🎶🎶 NYC is all about going. You can get a taste (literally and figuratively) of so many different worlds here. During the day check out the art in the streets or museums, or hit up another one of the many museums around, shop, take a walking tour or just people watch.
Then at night you can get all fancy for a special dinner, take a water cruise, catch that incredible Broadway show that you have been dying to see, listen to some music at a speak easy or get a cocktail at a swanky club or rooftop bar.

3. New Orleans

With a motto like Laissez les bon temps rouler (let the good times roll), how could you go wrong! This city has a culture all it’s own. Rich in history and creole influence it permeates into everything from food to music. There is plenty to experience during the day like tour a plantation or a swamp, visit a cemetary or a voodoo tour or walk around one or more of the Quarters. At night (or day even), take a stroll along Bourbon street just to say you have been there and make sure to try a hurricane or relax to the sweet sounds of jazz.

4. Washington DC

The Capitol city! Now this city has sooo much to do! And I promise you don’t even have to like politics! 😜 From memorials like the FDR (where my hubby proposed), to the various Smithsonian museums (the American History is my personal fave), to the national mall, there is an insane amount of FREE ways to spend your time here. There is almost always some event or exhibit to go to also. And you CAN NOT miss a night tour of the city. There is nothing quite like the Lincoln all lit up in the night sky. Some fun areas to hang out in after dark are Arlington (Ballston in particular), U Street, Dupont circle, Logan Circle and H street (biergarten).

5. Atlanta

Oh Hot’ Lanta. This city is often overlooked anymore but is full of history and culture. You gotta get a refreshing coke at the Coca Cola museum and visit one of the best aquariums in the US. Do you remember the 1996 Summer Olympic games? Go to the place it was hosted at – Centennial Olympic Park. Atlanta has a thriving nightlife! So if you love music, nightclubs or bars, check it out. Music, museums, arts, the civil.war movement.

6. Orlando

Florida is home to many amusement parks that offer a full day and night experience. The 2 in particular that would be a magical place to spend your birthday would be either Disney or Universal. Both young and old alike could celebrate in style. I mean who doesn’t like rides, shows and good food all under the same umbrella?

7. Chicago

The Windy City has so much to offer! Sports, museums, mob history (my fave), and deep dish pizzas! Plus the architecture in this city is incredible! The views of the city from any if the observation desks are just beautiful. For some extra fun, check out a sporting event, Navy Pier, or some of the many speakeasies.

8. Nashville

The Music City is has been THE hub of country for as long as I remember. There is tons to do during the day from checking out the museums and culture. Then at night have some fun on Lower Broadway.

Wrapping It Up

There are tons and tons of other amazing places to go and celebrate your birthday with your family, friends or someone special. Of course, you will want to plan a trip around your interests but all of the places mentioned above have something for just about anyone.

I would personally love to go to several new (to me) places and possibly even try different themed trips, like a spa getaway to somewhere posh.

There are plenty of places on my “Birthday Trip” list that i am certain would be a fun time, San Diego, San Fransisco, Napa Valley, Portland, Seattle, Austin, Miami and Reno…just to name a few. 😉

What cities are best for celebrating in your opinion?

I live in Las Vegas and indeed it is the ideal tourist spot. There is so much to see and experience. Walking down the strip and watching the display of lights at night is great. During the day there are lots of places to visit.

I think a lot of people look over this destination because they believe if they do not gamble or drink, they wouldn’t enjoy it. But there really is so much more to enjoy!

I love traveling for my birthday! We spent my husband’s 30th in Vegas, my 40th in Jamaica, and I spent my last birthday on a Southwest plane to Dallas 🙂

This is something I have wanted to do. Being retired from the military, I did get to travel a lot through Europe, unfortunately, not with family. I do plan on going to Vegas sometime, That is one place I have not been to yet.
    Thanks for the tips.
